It’s Always Good to Get the Last Word…
As cinemas darkened across England on Thursday for a month-long lockdown to fight the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, those in the exhibition sector are gamely playing ball, despite knowing full well that the latest enforced closure could mean that some cinemas may not reopen at all.
Other independent cinemas have permanently altered their business model. The Northern Light cinema in Wirksworth decided to remodel with a reduced capacity and change the venue to a stylish, high-end offering.
“We’re [under] no illusions as to the difficulty we’ll face over the next few months, but we’re confident that our approach will be well received by our audience,” cinema owner Paul Carr tells Variety. “By offering a smaller, more intimate experience, we’ll be able to offer a great night out and keep it safe and in style.”
We’re Moving in Exalted Circles…
The pandemic has caused a huge blow to cinemas, many of which have had to close following the delays to film releases like that of No Time To Die. A trip to the pictures may look a little bit different, but the experience doesn’t have to be compromised. Whether heading out, mask in hand, to watch a movie, signing up for a membership or purchasing merchandise, here is Tatler’s guide to the country’s best indie cinemas to support.
The Northern Lights Cinema, Derbyshire
For Derbyshire locals, the Northern Lights Cinema is quite literally a home away from home, with screenings full of chintzy armchairs that transport you to the grandest of living rooms. Branching out to cosy outdoor screenings since the pandemic, this cinema has many new, exciting and COVID-secure plans ahead for the reopening of their indoor screenings. Until then, a visit to the cinema foyer deli is a must – bag yourself a selection of freshly made cheeses, bread, olive oils and chutney until lights, camera, action!
