We’re Looking Forward to Welcoming You Back to The Northern Light Cinema and Bar on May 17th

We’ve spent lockdown having a facelift and a rearrangement to transform The Northern Light Cinema and Bar in Wirksworth into a venue that promises you one of the best nights out in Derbyshire. Join us as we reopen our doors!

The Northern Light Cinema and Bar is delighted to have finally gotten the governmental green light that we can open our doors once again from Monday May 17th and we cannot wait to welcome you all back. We’re reopening our Box Office from 6pm, Monday May 10th, to give you plenty of time to book in and pay us a visit, whether that be for a film in our cosy, Covid-safe theatre space, some food and drink in our stylish bar area, or why not both?

Our main goal during this time of transformation has been to create a space that keeps everybody safe without having to sacrifice comfort or style, so you can experience a night out at the movies in Wirksworth that still feels like a special event, not one big health and safety procedure. We’ve adapted our cinema and bar space to create an environment that has form, function, safety and style built in. Our bar will have full table service and in our theatre you can order more drinks from the comfort of your seat simply by using your phone and the QR code provided, so no matter what you can sit back and relax.

When you walk through the door, you’ll see that we’ve revamped our bar area and have installed boothed seating so you can relax in the safety of your bubble. We have a range of cocktails on the menu and Buxton Brewery beers on tap, with all spirits and mixers sourced from ethically run or socially minded producers that are of the best quality, making our cocktails an exquisite treat. Our food menu has also changed, with our kitchen serving small plates that are big on flavour, as well as a selection of pizzettas on offer, vegetarian and vegan options, deserts, and movie nibbles too.

In the theatre, we’ve removed half the seats to make a Covid-safe environment to enjoy a film and have introduced a new Blackpop Box at the back of the auditorium for those of you looking for a luxurious experience for a special occasion, or perhaps ‘just because’.  A two-seater sofa in a special private part of the theatre and cocktails at your seat on arrival makes this a special experience. And if you have more than one other guest, let us know and we can add more armchairs to the box to seat your party.

Our film showings begin at 7.30pm, so we encourage you to book a table and enjoy some food and drink before the show. We want to offer a whole night out experience that’s much more than just a trip to the cinema, so we will also have post-show slots in the bar for a dissection session over a Sidecar (or whatever your favourite cocktail is), or if you’re comfy you can always stay seated in the theatre and order more drinks through your phone.

With only 26 seats, you can book out the whole cinema for special occasions too, perfect for a special celebration among friends and family or even corporate hire.

We’re really looking forward to greeting you back to come eat, watch a film, sit and chat and dissect the film after in the bar. Take a look at our upcoming film programme, find out how to purchase our Film or Food & Drink Gift Vouchers in advance, or find more information on our Covid safe measures. See you soon!

White Peak Distillery Christmas Pop-Up Shop

As one door closes, another one opens as they say. With Derby and Derbyshire placed under Tier 3 restrictions, we’ve handed over our bar to our friends at White Peak Distillery to sell their range of gins, rums, glassware, gift packs and more – plus it means you can have a sneaky peak at what we’ve been up to.

Opening from this coming Thursday 3rd December, they’ll be open each Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 19th December from 12-6pm, with a few late nights too.

Check out their range of fabulous gifts and get into the spirit of Christmas, quite literally…

It’s Always Good to Get the Last Word

Thank you to Variety for talking to our very own Paul on the difficulties the cinema and exhibition sectors face in the midst of a second lockdown and about the changes we’ve made to The Northern Light Cinema so that we can still offer a safe, special night out without compromising on style once it’s safe to reopen.

“Other independent cinemas have permanently altered their business model. The Northern Light cinema in Wirksworth decided to remodel with a reduced capacity and change the venue to a stylish, high-end offering.

“We’re [under] no illusions as to the difficulty we’ll face over the next few months, but we’re confident that our approach will be well received by our audience,” cinema owner Paul Carr tells Variety. “By offering a smaller, more intimate experience, we’ll be able to offer a great night out and keep it safe and in style.””

We’re Moving in Exalted Circles

A huge thank you to Tatler for featuring The Northern Light Cinema in their article on the UK’s best indie cinemas to support during the pandemic. Here’s what they had to say about us:

“For Derbyshire locals, the Northern Light Cinema is quite literally a home away from home, with screenings full of chintzy armchairs that transport you to the grandest of living rooms. Branching out to cosy outdoor screenings since the pandemic, this cinema has many new, exciting and COVID-secure plans ahead for the reopening of their indoor screenings. Until then, a visit to the cinema foyer deli is a must – bag yourself a selection of freshly made cheeses, bread, olive oils and chutney until lights, camera, action!”
